Abstract [en]
The Ports of Stockholm is building a new port for rolling goods and container traffic. The Stockholm Norvik Port will open in 2020 and is will be the Baltic Sea freight of the future. The new area was a bay that was filled with crushed bedrock in the 1980s. During the construction two large volumes of approximately 300000 m3 of very soft clay was trapped inside the fill. Due to the procedure for placing the fill, two thirds of the clay were covered with crushed rock whereas for the remaining part the clay reached the surface. To improve the shear strength of the clay two different improvement techniques were employed. In the case with very soft clay all the way up to the surface, deep mixing was applied and in areas were the clay was superimposed with crushed rock, jet grouting was used. In the deep mixing area, the columns were 800 mm in diameter and the total area ratio was 70 %. The total length of the columns were approximately 200000 meters. The jet grouting was designed with a diameter of 1.5 meter and a spacing of 2.5 meters and a total length of 40000 meters. The main goal was to find a cost efficient and environmental friendly binder combination for deep mixing as well as for the jet grouting at The Stockholm Norvik Port.
